I can’t quite believe I’m writing this, but I have actually managed to go an entire year without buying clothes.
I have a major passion for fashion and clothes but when the national lockdown was first introduced, I found myself resorting to online shopping on an almost daily basis.
We all know how difficult and mentally taxing the past two years have been and I resorted to retail therapy to try and feel a serotonin boost.

But things quickly got out of hand and my love of fashion became an obsession, with space rapidly depleting in our tiny little flat as more and more parcels arrived.
I get very attached and sentimental about clothing – there’s items in my wardrobe that I’ve had since I was a teenager, so there was very little room to add any more clothes to my vast collection.
I also wanted to embark on the challenge to try and develop more sustainable shopping habits, especially when thinking about the devastating impact fast fashion has on our planet.
Fast fashion is a design, manufacturing and marketing method which is built on rapidly producing high volumes of clothing to keep up with current trends.
Many trending pieces quickly find themselves discarded after a few wears and then in landfills, while garment workers are often low paid and worked extremely hard in order to keep up with demand.
I was determined to break the habit and reduce the amount of clothing filling up my home.
I think some people thought I was exaggerating about the colossal amount of clothes I own but when moving house in September, friends and family chipped in to help with the move. Every single person who offered to lend a hand was stunned when faced with bags and bags of my clothes. My friend filled his car three times and it barely scratched the surface.
Now, it’s finally 2022 and I did it, I went 12 months without shopping – though there were some hiccups on the way.
When the national Events Research Programme (ERP) was introduced earlier this year, which was used to provide key scientific data into how events for a range of audiences could be permitted to safely reopen as part of the government’s roadmap out of lockdown, I went to report from a number of the scenes.
In May, indie pop band Blossoms took over the beautiful Sefton Park in a giant tent reminiscent of the circus to wow the crowds and unite audiences with live music for the first time in months.
